Mick Jagger Family History

Overview

Michael Phillip Jagger, better known now as Sir Mick Jagger, was born on July 26th, 1943 to Basil (Joe) and Eva Jagger in Dartford near London.

Mick attended Wentworth Primary School where he and Keith Richard were classmates.  These two would be the nucleus of what would become the Rolling Stones, some say the greatest rock and roll band in the world.

The two had moved to London in 1961 and began performing and writing their own songs.

The Rolling Stones.  Their first performance with the Rolling Stones came a year later at the Marquee Club.  Soon they wrote their first international hit, I Can’t Get No Satisfaction.  It established the Rolling Stones’ image as defiant troublemakers in contrast to the Beatles as lovable moptops.

The rest is history.  The Rolling Stones, with Mick Jagger as their charismatic lead singer, have been making records and performing around the world for more than fifty years.

Yorkshire Roots

Mick Jagger has Yorkshire roots, starting in Dewsbury in the West Riding.  His four times great grandfather Joseph Jagger was born there in 1759.

Joseph’s son Thomas married Sarah Snell in Batley in January 1804.  Their son John was baptized that July at the New Chapel Independent Church in Morley near Leeds.  He married Abigail Scholes in Morley in 1831 five years after his sister Ruth had married Abigail’s brother William.

But their family seems to have split up in the 1860’s after the early deaths of John and his wife.  The younger Jagger son David, having first found lodgings in Bradford, migrated to Whitehaven in Cumberland where he worked as a printer and compositor.

David was married three times in Whitehaven.  His first two wives both died young while or after giving birth.  He married for a third time in 1879 to the widow Elizabeth Hodge (she came with a daughter Mary).  David and Elizabeth went on to have a child of their own, a son David, who was born in 1880.

South to Dartford in Kent

This David, Mick’s grandfather, left Cumberland for Eckington (near Chesterfield) in Derbyshire where he married.  He was a schoolmaster – first at Wickham Bishop (near Maldon) in Essex and then at Saddleworth in Yorkshire over the inter-war years.

David lived in the village of Greenfield near Saddleworth for more than two decades.  He was an organist at St. Mary’s church where there is a plaque stating the following:

“This plaque was erected by the members of his family in affectionate remembrance of D.E. Jagger who died on September 9, 1954.  Headmaster of St. Mary’s School and organist of this church for twenty years.”

David died in Blackpool.  His widow Harriet returned to her native Derbyshire where she lived to be ninety-eight.

David’s son Basil (better known as Joe) also became a schoolmaster.  He moved from Saddleworth to Dartford, Kent to teach in the 1930’s.  He married his wife Eva there in 1940.  Eva’s family had come from nearby Northfleet, although her father Alfred, a boat builder, made his home in Australia when Eva was born in 1913.

Their son Mick Jagger was born in Dartford in 1943.

Joe was a schoolmaster and also a fitness instructor (he helped to popularize the game of basketball in England).  Eva was a hairdresser.
