Adele Family History
Overview
Adele Laurie Blue Adkins, or simply Adele, was born on May 5th, 1988 to Penny Adkins and Marc Evans in the Tottenham district of north London. Evans left when Adele was two and she was brought up by her mother.
Adele and her mother departed London for Brighton when she was nine. But they returned to south London two years later and a flat in West Norwood. She graduated from the BRIT School for Performing Arts & Technology in Croydon in 2006.
Her success as a recording artist came quickly after that. Her first album 19 in 2008 went platinum. Even bigger was the 21 album released in 2011 which included the mega-hit Someone Like You. Two more chart-topping albums followed, 25 in 2015 and 30 in 2021. Today she is one of the world’s best-selling music artists, with sales of over 120 million records.
Tottenham Roots
Adele’s grandfather John had been a lorry driver for many years. In the early 1970’s he and his wife Doreen began work on a fruit and vegetable stall at the New Covent Garden Market. They lived in a small home in Tottenham for over thirty years.
Penny was the youngest of their five children. Speaking of her family, Doreen said:
“In 1986 we threw Adele’s mum out when she was 18. That’s what we did with all the kids. They had to make their own way in life. My kids, they all work. The whole family have got jobs. You have got to get on and it hasn’t done any of them any harm.”
Penny then met Marc Evans, a plumber from Penarth in Wales, and she had Adele two years later. She became a single Mum. She did have help from her elder sisters Kim and Nita in raising Adele.
